The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on our lives in many different ways. One industry that has been affected by the pandemic is the real estate industry. Over the past year, there has been a variety of buying trends that have developed as a result of the pandemic. While some of these trends are bound to change when the pandemic is over, there are some trends that will stay long after the pandemic is calmed and come to an end.

Home Office Space

One of the home buying trends that are here to stay is the habit to look for a home with a home office space. The rate of telecommuting and working from home had already been increasing rapidly over the past few years. This trend then increased dramatically starting in March 2020 and has continued to stay high. This has led to many homebuyers focusing on homes that offer a dedicated space that they can call a home office. Those that are looking to sell a home should look for ways to stage a home office in either a spare room, basement, or other areas in the home.

Outdoor Entertaining Space

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability to go out and socialize has been reduced. This has led to many more people spending their weekends at home by themselves or entertaining small groups in an outdoor setting. Due to this, the need to have an outdoor space where they can entertain is more important than ever. Buyers are bound to continue to look for properties that have nice patios or other outdoor spaces that they can enjoy.

Cozy and Comfortable Decor

When shopping for homes in the past, it was common for people to look for properties that were designed well with modern colors and features. These homes were often very impressive to show and would be a great place to entertain and throw parties. However, as more and more people are spending more time at home than ever before, there is now much more of a demand needed to keep the home comfortable. Buyers in coming years are bound to also look for properties that feel warm, cozy, and inviting.

Space for a Home Gym

The fitness industry has also been affected by the pandemic. While many people used to enjoy going to the gym or specialty fitness studios, this has become more difficult as people have focused on social distancing. Instead, more and more people are looking for ways to exercise at home. To do this as well as possible, you will need to have a home gym that is equipped with the gear that you need to get in a good workout. Going forward, many are going to look for homes that have a basement or other area of the home that can house a home fitness center.

Larger Kitchen

While many people enjoy celebrating by going out to a nice restaurant, it has continued to be more and more common for people to try and celebrate at home by cooking a gourmet meal. Due to this trend, buyers today are looking for homes that have a larger kitchen that will make it easier to make a great meal. While kitchens have always been a focal point for property buyers, large kitchens are going to be even more in demand in the years following the pandemic.

The impact of COVID-19 has been very apparent. In less than a year, there have been very drastic changes in how people shop for homes and what they are looking for in an ideal property. While there could be some changes to this in the future, there are several home buying trends that will continue for years to come.
